A year later, Diane and I were still together. We still had date nights: pizza and movie and in bed it was Little Dougie Fineman and Mrs. Donaldson. I was more than satisfied and Diane praised my tongue work. "Doug, you are so much better than you were when we first met. My orgasms are incredible."

One night we were at our favorite pizza place. I thought it was unusual that instead of sitting across from me, Diane sat next to me. After we ordered, "Doug, do you remember Cheri Martin. She taught 5th grade?"

"I don't remember that name."

"It doesn't really matter. Even though she's about ten years older than me and a widow, we're best friends. Girlfriends often don't have any secrets. I've told her all about us."

"Everything?"

"As I said, girlfriends don't have many secrets."

"What does this have to do with me?"

"Doug, she hasn't been with a man in a decade. Why don't you take her to a movie next week and then come here for pizza?"

"Why would I do that? I thought you and I had a date."

"We can go out, but if you took Cheri out, I'm sure I could find a way to show my appreciation." Her hand was on my thigh. "Besides, it's been so long for Cheri, she might go crazy. You might get very, very lucky."

I was thinking, I had a sure thing with Diane Richman, although I didn't want to say anything. I didn't want her to think I was taking her for granted.

"Do it for me, Doug." She squeezed my thigh a little tighter and a little higher. "When we get home, I'll give you a taste of what I have in store for you."

I picked up Cheri Martin at her home. She lived in the same condominium complex as Diane. "Doug, this is very nice of you. I haven't been on a date in ages and I'll be honest, I've never dated a white guy. I'm a little nervous. How about you?"

I'd never dated a black woman. I'd gone to a state university with a significant percentage of the student body black, brown, Asian. The same was true at law school. "I've never dated a black woman. Let me suggest, instead of a movie, where we can't talk, why don't I take you to dinner? A little nicer than pizza."

"I'd like that."

Although over fifty, Cheri Martin, looked much younger, talked much younger and acted much younger.

Some good friends owned a small Italian restaurant. I knew that they'd find a table for me even at this hour on a Friday night. "Doug, I don't drink much, but I'd love a martini."

"I'm having Chianti. Steve, the owner, won't tell me the vineyard or where they get it. I suspect they make it in their backyard," I laughed.

She may have taught grammar school, but Cheri was actually Dr. Martin. "I can influence kids more at the 5th grade level than I can at the college level."

Dinner was fun and we laughed a lot. "Doug, Diane told me about you. I don't know where this is going to lead, but I made an apple pie this afternoon. How about coffee and apple pie?"

We sat on her couch and continued our dinner conversation. "Doug, I haven't been with a man since my husband died. I've had a great evening, and I'm a little scared, but I don't want it to end. Stay for
