Nick stood in front of the door. He stood 6' tall, mid-twenties, jet black hair, clean shaven, with an athletic build. He was wearing a red polo shirt, blue jeans and sneakers. It was almost a year since he got the assistant coaches' job at the college. He was so grateful that his female boss was willing to give him a shot. It didn't hurt that he found her very attractive and enjoyed being around her even though he knew that's as close as he was going to get. But being away for an overnight for the first time, he thought it would be a good chance to get her in a social setting and get to know more about her. He knocked. A feminine voice called from inside.
"Who is it?"
"It's Nick."
"Hold on a sec."
A few seconds later, Nick heard the chain unlatch and the door opened. He saw his boss, Candice. She was in her early 30's by his thought, single, very attractive, long brown hair, about 5' 8" tall and thin. She was wearing a gray pullover and a blouse under it, black leggings and sneakers.
"What's up?"
"I just wanted to let you know I did a bed check and everyone is in their rooms and settled in for the night."
"Great!"
"I was wondering, since it's still early, I was wondering if you would be interested in going downstairs and have a drink or something."
A wry grin came across her face. He had seen that grin before. It was one in which her first thought was 'what stupid idea and how am I going to explain to him how dumb he is', but she hesitated and thought for a second longer.
"Sure, why not? Give me a sec."
She went into her room and moments later, opened the door, stepped out and closed the door behind her. They started walking down the hall as the door clicked behind them. A few minutes later, they were at the bar in the hotel lobby. They both ordered a beer and were talking. It was a pleasant conversation where they told stories about their lives, mostly on the field, and some family and friend things. They smiled a lot at each other, laughed at the jokes and comical situations from the stories they told and he felt that she had let down her guard a little bit. She seemed a little more open and relaxed which, in turn, made him feel more comfortable around her.
The bartender came over and announced the last call.
"Oh crap," she announced. "Is it that late? Damn. Okay, could bring over the tab and I'll pay it," she told the bartender.
He nodded and went to the register. A minute later, he left the bill on the table. She picked it up, nodded in agreement, reached into the side pocket of her leggings and produced a credit card. She handed it to him and he went off to process the card.
"How much do I owe you?" asked Nick.
"Oh, nothing. Don't worry about it."
"Well, I have to give you something. I mean did do half of the drinking."
"No, it's okay. We are good."
Nick gave an angular nod and shrugged his shoulders. "Thanks," he said.
The bartender came back with a copy of the receipt and a pen. She gave a tip, signed it and gave it back to him. She then wrapped her copy around the card.
