step into our demo area." He gestured toward a quieter corner of the booth."I can't right now," she lied smoothly. "I've got an appointment to keep. "How about later? Or even this evening, when we could go somewhere quieter. Only if you've got the time, of course."
He hesitated, scanning her face as if assessing her sincerity. "I'm not done here until eight."
"Eight's my lucky number." She smiled brightly. "My name's Hannah. Meet me at the Continental, boardwalk level. Eight thirty. Drinks on me."
"I've seen the Continental. Eight thirty it is."
That evening, Hannah was in the bar of the Continental early. Mark appeared on time, now in a polo shirt rather than his Meyer uniform. It didn't take long for him to use his phone to show her the video he'd referred to earlier. He followed it up by further explaining some of the technical points mentioned in the video, with Hannah pretending to follow everything he was saying.
"This isn't my own design," he said. "I've only been with the company two months, but I'm working on an even better version, which will be available later this year."
"Only two months," she replied. "Where did you work before?"
"I was with a defense contractor, AquaSonix. Working on sonar systems."
"I've heard of them. Based in Baltimore. You see I'm a business consultant and I specialize in the maritime sector."
"Oh?" Mark sipped his beer as he studied her. "My ex-girlfriend works there. That's one of the reasons I left. She broke up with me and it's hard seeing your ex at work every day."
"What did you do there?" asked Hannah. "Were you working on Poseidon?"
Mark froze mid-sip. His knuckles whitened around the beer glass. "How do you know that name?"
"As a business consultant, dealing with the maritime industry every day, I get to hear most things," she said casually.
Mark set his beer down, his earlier ease replaced by rigid caution. "Poseidon isn't public knowledge."
"Two companies are currently trying to acquire AquaSonix," she replied. "So I don't think Poseidon's a secret exactly."
Mark leaned forward, lowering his voice as cocktail glasses clinked around them. "Those companies might know the name Poseidon because they're defense sharks sniffing leaks. But they don't know the details." Suddenly changing the subject, his voice returned to its normal level. "Are we going to get something to eat? Lunch was a long time ago."
"The restaurant looked busy when I came in," she replied. "Why don't we go to my room and order something through room service?"
Mark studied her face. "Alright. If that's easier."
They took the elevator to Hannah's floor, with Mark being deep in thought and the silence between them filled only by the soft hum of the machinery. In her room, he lingered near the window overlooking the boardwalk lights while she called downstairs for grilled salmon and a steak. When she hung up, he turned abruptly. "You didn't bring me here for dinner, did you? Poseidon's classified Level Two military tech. Even mentioning it violates my NDA."
Hannah moved closer, her tone low and deliberate. "It may be classified, but a company called Maritech is trying to acquire AquaSonix because of Poseidon. They're rushing the deal through without following all of the usual procedures. Tell me why it's worth that desperation."
Mark's jaw tightened. "I couldn't possibly comment."
"You already did." Hannah stepped even closer. "Tell me what Poseidon is, Mark."
"You know, I'm tempted to leave," he said. "But I could really do with that steak."
Hannah realized that she needed to tread gently. She couldn't afford to scare him away. There was still plenty of time to quiz him that night and after the meal he might feel more relaxed.
"Yes I'm hungry too." She gestured toward the minibar. "Let's crack open some beers while we wait." Mark nodded, his shoulders easing slightly as she handed him a bottle. He twisted off the cap, took a long pull, and sank into the plush armchair by the window.
Hannah sat opposite him, keeping her posture relaxed. "So is working at Meyer better for you? You're very enthusiastic about boat engines. I get the impression you're at home there."
"We don't just build boat engines," he replied. "What you see at the boat show is just a part of what we do. The pleasure craft side is interesting and has a certain glamour to it, but we also build engines that power fishing trawlers, cargo ships, ferries - the workhorses of the sea."
He halted as room service arrived, the aroma of seared steak and grilled salmon feeling irresistible to both of them. They ate quietly for a moment, the only sounds being the clinking of silverware, the distant thrum of boardwalk music, and the ocean waves as the tide came in.
A bubble of normalcy had settled over them and Hannah decided not to burst it just yet. She asked Mark about the breakup with his girlfriend he'd mentioned earlier. He said it had come out of the blue and was hard to get over when he had to see her at work every day, but he was over it now. He asked her if she was in a relationship, and she told him that she was married but separated.
The personal talk continued until they finished their meals. Mark appeared to have visibly relaxed and Hannah tried to build on that by handing him another beer. Silence fell on the room once more, but it wouldn't be for long as Hannah was intent on circling back to Poseidon.
"It must have been a big decision to leave AquaSonix," she said. "I know you're enthusiastic about what you're doing now, but Poseidon must be something major, something revolutionary. Something it would be hard for someone to walk away from."
Mark paused for a moment and then rose from his chair. "I've enjoyed our chat this evening, but I think it's best if I leave now."
Hannah rose too, blocking his way out. "Don't be in such a hurry," she said. "I'm all alone in town. I could do with the company."
Mark hesitated, unsure how to respond. Hannah decided that she needed to take the initiative and moved closer to him. She put her arms around his neck and kissed him. He didn't kiss her back, but he didn't do anything to stop her either.
Hannah broke the kiss and smiled brightly. He still hesitated, still unsure how to respond, still unsure what to do. Hannah tried again, but he still didn't kiss her back, appearing frozen, looking apprehensive, wondering what he might be getting himself into.
She decided to try a different tack. She took a step back and unbuttoned her blouse and then slipped it from her shoulders. He looked surprised, but she could tell he was also becoming captivated. She reached behind her back and unhooked her bra, slipping that from her shoulders too.
Mark suddenly shook his head, as though waking himself up or coming out of a trance. "Like I said, I think it's best if I leave now."
"Of course," said Hannah. "If that's what you want. I'm sorry that my breasts aren't good enough for you."
"Your breasts are gorgeous," he said, making a point of looking them over. But I reckon you're some kind of foreign spy. I could get into a lot of trouble talking to you."
"I'm not a foreign spy, Mark," she said, deliberately chuckling. "If I was a foreign spy I'd be asking you for specifics. How Poseidon works, technical specifications, that sort of thing. Foreign spies target people who have access to blueprints. I haven't asked you for anything like that. It would just help me in my work a lot if I knew what kind of project Poseidon is."
The room fell silent for a moment, the only noise coming from outside, the faint but persistent sound of distant carnival music and every so often a wave crashing onto the shore. They stood facing each other and then Hannah decided to make another move and resume her undressing. She reached for the zipper of her skirt and pulled it open, the rasp of the zipper sounding loud in the quiet room.
"You said that Poseidon's classified military tech. Does that mean it's some sort of weapon?"
He hesitated. "No... it's an acoustic transmission array." He could tell from her expression that his words hadn't meant very much. "A new type of underwater communication system," he added.
It was Hannah's turn to pause her words, as she absorbed this information and tried to understand the significance of it, but she still continued with her undressing. He'd given her something valuable, but she felt that she needed more and had to press him further. She slid her panties down her legs and stood fully naked before him. For a moment, they just gazed at each other.
Hannah broke the silence. "Is it just me that's going to be naked tonight?" she asked, a little sarcastically. "And you just stand there fully clothed?" Mark suddenly jolted into action and tugged his polo shirt over his head. His chest was lean and defined, the muscles tensing as he tossed the shirt aside.
"This acoustic transmission... What makes it revolutionary? Why would Maritech crush an acquisition timeline for it?"
Mark hesitated, staring intently at Hannah's naked body, the boardwalk lights painting fleeting patterns across her skin. He reached for his belt buckle, undoing it quickly. "To understand why it's revolutionary, you need to understand where we are now." He kicked off his shoes, chinos pooling at his ankles.
"Underwater communication has always been very difficult." he continued, moving very close to her. "Underwater, radio waves travel poorly." His hands found her breasts. "Laser signals scatter quickly." He leaned in and kissed her. "Acoustic coms are slow and easily disrupted."
His fingers continued to play with her breasts, concentrating on the nipples now, as Hannah ran her hands across his shoulders. "In short, timely and reliable communications just don't exist." He guided her backward onto the bed, his mouth exploring her neck, his hands returning to her breasts, finding them irresistible.
"So how does Poseidon solve that?" she murmured, her hands returning to his shoulders, and running down his back, caressing him gently. He focused on her nipples again, which were proving very responsive to his touch and were now very hard beneath his fingers.
"It solves it through a new kind of acoustic technology, giving the world something its never had access to before." He spread her legs gently, fingers tracing her inner thighs. Hannah gasped softly. "Meaning effective underwater communication for the first time ever".
His fingers slid inside her, tracing slow, deliberate circles as Hannah arched against him. "Effective meaning... fast?" she breathed, fighting to keep her mind focused, trying to understand as much as possible, but starting to succumb to the rising tide of arousal.
"Fast and reliable," Mark murmured against her collarbone, his thumb pressing rhythmically. "You asked what makes it revolutionary." He withdrew his hand, moving to position himself between her thighs. "It's a revolution because no underwater mission will remain untouched."
Mark was in position and was ready. Hannah braced herself as he entered her, her breath catching at the sudden fullness. "Missions?" she managed to say, as he began to thrust, still managing to concentrate, wrapping her legs around his waist to anchor herself.
"The applications are endless," Mark gasped, establishing a rhythm, thrusting deeper. "Communication... in... water... suddenly... effective..." His rhythm grew urgent, the thrusts punctuating each word. "Imagine... submarines... talking... to... each... other..."
Hannah arched upward, her mind scrambling to register his revelations amidst the raw physicality of his actions. His hips snapped forward relentlessly as he continued to thrust, the boardwalk lights blurring through the window as sensation started to drown her analysis.
"The data transfer rate...," she gasped, trying to anchor herself mentally between thrusts, "...how much faster?"
Mark groaned, pressing deeper, sweat gleaming on his temples. "Orders... of... magnitude...," he managed, his rhythm fracturing as sensation overwhelmed coherence.
Hannah clutched his shoulders, nails digging in, holding him tight, desperate to extract strategic value from intimacy - just as she had on previous occasions. But Mark was a fading force now and his movements grew erratic, his thrusts losing precision to primal urgency.
"Broadband... equivalent... to..." His words dissolved into a strangled gasp. He shuddered violently against her, collapsing forward as release claimed him, his revelation unfinished.
Hannah lay pinned beneath him, his weight suddenly oppressive. The technical secrets she needed - transfer rate, transmission range, encryption protocols, military deployment timeline, civilian access and applications - remained locked away behind his spent body.
He rolled off moments later, breathing heavily, but he wasn't finished with her. He stayed close and his hand reached out, with the intention of taking her to her own release. His fingers worked gently, but firmly, and Hannah became lost in his touch, feeling her peak approaching.
It wasn't long before her climax hit. She gasped very loudly as her body shuddered with the intense waves washing over her. He moved closer to her, her body trembling with the aftermath, trying to put his arm around her. But Hannah's mind was now on other things. As the trembling died down she got up from the bed, wrapping herself in a hotel robe.
She crossed the room and filled two glasses with water. Returning, she handed one to him. "Orders of magnitude faster," she prompted, keeping her voice low and curious. "That implies real time submarine coordination?" Mark took a long drink, avoiding her look.
"It implies all kinds of things." He paused, wiping sweat from his brow. "It means drone swarms won't lose sync in deep trenches. As I said earlier, the applications are endless. For now it's military tech, but that's just the beginning. It's going to be a civilian revolution too."
Hannah sat beside him, thighs brushing intentionally. "But AquaSonix is a big company, a defense contractor. They could develop this on their own. Why merge with Maritech?"
Mark shrugged. "I wouldn't know, I'm an engineer." He stood abruptly, snatching up his discarded clothes. Hannah moved swiftly, intercepting him before he could dress. Her fingers traced the lean muscles of his abdomen and trailed down his sternum- a distraction, a delay.
"Tell me what you know about Maritech."
Mark caught her wrist, his grip firm but not harsh. "That's enough," he said quietly. "You'll get me into trouble. I've said too much already." He pulled away, stepping into his chinos with swift efficiency. Hannah watched, robe clutched tight, as the engineer reassembled himself - shirt tugged over sweat-dampened skin, belt buckle clicking shut. The warmth of a few minutes ago had evaporated.
Hannah blocked the door. "I can see that Maritech wants AquaSonix for Poseidon. But why does AquaSonix want Maritech? What part of the puzzle am I missing?"
Mark shrugged. "I wouldn't know, I'm an engineer." He tied the laces of his boat shoes and stood up. "I need you to let me out now."
Hannah stepped aside. He opened the door and was gone. The heavy thud of its closing echoed in the sudden stillness. Alone now, she sank onto the rumpled bed, her thoughts racing as she ran everything she'd learned that evening through her head.
The following morning her mind was still in a whirl, but she had work to do and knew that she needed to focus. She gathered her thoughts and drafted an email to Rossi, keeping it simple. "Poseidon is a breakthrough in acoustic technology, a real game changer, something that will revolutionize underwater communications, both military and civilian. Maritech must know about it and want to get hold of it. Anyone who knows about Poseidon would want to get hold of it."
She sent it without any mention of Mark Parker, preferring to keep his name out of it. She had confirmed that Poseidon was real and was very important, as well as describing the nature of the project, and she hoped that Rossi would be satisfied with that information. She herself was satisfied that Poseidon not only explained Maritech's interest in merging with AquaSonix, but also explained their haste to do so. She felt that something as big and as far-reaching as Poseidon had to be something you'd naturally want to acquire as soon as you possibly could.
She sent a similar message to Sylvia Archer, who replied quite quickly. "Good work. I've passed your information to our client, who was highly impressed. This is bigger than we thought. But to help us formulate the bid, we'd like to know how much of an upgrade Poseidon is on current communications, what stage of development it's reached and what the timeline is for its availability. Anything you can give us on these matters would be very appreciated."
Hannah hesitated, unsure how to reply. Mark Parker had left without providing those specifics. She recalled how reluctant he'd been to share even the basics and in the end had felt that he'd said too much. Her feeling was that she'd pushed him to his limit and that pressing him further wouldn't be a good idea. Yet Sylvia's client wanted vital details to inform their bid strategy.
She began drafting a reply, taking her time. "Poseidon shouldn't be seen as an upgrade on current underwater communications, but as a transformation. It represents a generational leap, not incremental improvement. The prototype is operational and being validated in deep sea trials, with military rollout likely within 1-2 years and civilian availability within 3-5 years."
The first part was good, that Poseidon was transformative. The second part was a complete fabrication, as Mark hadn't said any of that, but she'd noted the hushed awe in his voice and decided to read between the lines. She'd kept the timeline fairly vague anyway. She hit send.
The fabrication felt flimsy, but she knew that Creighton needed to present the bid for AquaSonix soon and she felt time pressing. She regretted that she was risking her credibility on educated guesses, but answers were required quickly and it was a case of needs must.
She decided to check out of her hotel and return home. Not wanting to press Mark further, there was no reason to remain in Atlantic City. She hadn't found out everything she wanted to know about Poseidon, but she was more than happy with what she had discovered and regarded the trip as a big success.
The following morning an email arrived from Sonia confirming that Creighton had now presented the formal offer to AquaSonix. She thanked Hannah for her assistance in the matter. She also relayed that AquaSonix had confirmed receipt of the offer and that their shareholders would be fully informed about it.
Hannah assumed from this last news that the AquaSonix board had no intention of recommending the offer to their shareholders. They would stick with their original recommendation to accept the merger with Maritech and would be proceeding with the rescheduled shareholder vote on that recommendation. Nevertheless, shareholders would now know of the alternate offer, which appeared to be a very good offer, a cash offer rather than the equity offered by Maritech and at a generous premium above the current share price.
Hannah had done her part in helping to get the Creighton offer together, but she couldn't see how it could succeed without the bidder taking matters into their own hands and buying shares on the open market. In other words, a hostile takeover. In any event, she didn't see any further part for her to play. Now she could only wait and see what would happen.
She was still potentially involved in the matter from Rossi's angle, but she hadn't heard from him since she reported her Poseidon findings to him. She saw no reason to contact him again, knowing that he would be sure to contact her if he wanted anything further.
She decided to focus on other things and began reviewing potential investments that might be of interest to Rossi and to others that he knew, such as the scarab beetle. She remembered that the scarab had considered her as a potential manager of his empire when she worked for Layton Moreby, and she wanted to demonstrate her value independently, to see if she could revive that interest. She began drafting reports on promising but overlooked companies in emerging markets - ones with high potential but too obscure or risky for mainstream investors.
The list of companies grew and she became quite absorbed in the task, aware that she was not just investing her time, but her reputation. If she could get this right the results were potentially very significant, but each company she listed would require careful analysis, perhaps with some outside assistance or even input from contacts on the ground. Finding the right contacts would be a challenge in itself, but that was a bridge she'd cross later.
Reading the business news, she noticed an item on AquaSonix. A new date had been announced for the shareholder vote on the merger with Maritech, plus the offer had been improved from the original one. No doubt because of the alternate offer, thought Hannah. So would the merger now be approved, as had previously seemed likely? Or could the alternate offer play a decisive role and stop it in its tracks? She would await the outcome with interest.
Her phone pinged with a notification from her banking app. A payment had been received into her account. She didn't recognize the name of the sender, but from the amount she realized it was payment from Rossi, covering both her fee for the investigative work into the merger and the bonus agreed if her findings uncovered anything major previously undisclosed. Rossi had clearly accepted that Poseidon was major.
She felt a flush of satisfaction, the payment indicating that she'd provided good service and delivered results. She thought it was a little odd that she still hadn't heard anything from Rossi directly, so she decided to drop him a brief email, just thanking him for the payment.
She went back to drafting her reports on overlooked companies in emerging markets. She planned to spend quite some time doing this, as the prospect of uncovering even one great investment opportunity was enthralling to her and incentive enough to keep going.
A few days passed with Hannah engrossed in her work, making steady progress. Then she saw the name AquaSonix again in the business news. Their shares were rising steadily, with the report citing rumors of "undisclosed technological breakthroughs" as the catalyst.
What exactly was going on? Somebody was clearly up to something, thought Hannah. Someone wanted the world to believe that AquaSonix was sitting on something transformative, but didn't want to reveal what it was. Controlled leakage to manipulate market sentiment.
Giving the matter some thought, she couldn't see any reason for the European bidder to have leaked the information and brought about an increase in the AquaSonix share price. That wouldn't work in their interests at all. It would only make their proposed takeover more expensive. And less appealing to the AquaSonix shareholders.
So what about Maritech? A technological breakthrough at AquaSonix would surely make the merger less appealing to their shareholders as well. Moreover, the merger had already been recommended by the AquaSonix board and was about to be put to a shareholder vote, so Maritech wouldn't want to upset the applecart at this stage.
The same argument applied to AquaSonix. Having recommended the merger, their board would hardly seek to undermine it now. Unless there was someone there who didn't agree with the board's recommendation to merge and had leaked the information on his own initiative. But if so, such a leak surely wouldn't have been left until this late stage.
It all pointed to the leak having come from Rossi or from someone that Rossi had passed the information to. Although she hadn't heard from him, he appeared to have been making use of the information that she'd provided. But to what end? What game was he playing exactly?
She was tempted to contact him to satisfy her curiosity and find out what he was up to, but she wasn't sure if that was a good idea. She had been paid for the work done and the information provided and perhaps what Rossi did with that information was strictly his business.
Still the question of what was going on wouldn't let her go and she felt her concept of professional boundaries dissolving in a wave of professional curiosity. She reasoned that Rossi was using her information and it was reasonable for her to want to understand the consequences of how that information was being used.
She decided to send him an email, choosing her words very carefully and keeping it short. She simply said that she'd noticed the AquaSonix share price climbing and wondered if this was in accordance with his plans. That was a rather innocent inquiry, she thought, which he could hardly object to, and she would wait to see what, if any, information it would draw from him.
Rossi's reply came the following day. "Given the nature of Poseidon, and the potential it has to skyrocket the valuation of AquaSonix, I find myself professionally obligated to recommend that my clients reject the merger with Maritech and vote for the company to remain independent. I've told them that agreeing to the merger now, before the market knows and understands what Poseidon is, would be financially negligent, as by surrendering their shareholding they would be giving up a strategic asset for a fraction of its likely future value. Needless to say, in giving my clients this advice it was necessary to give them some idea of what the new technology is, as they can hardly act without understanding why the valuation of AquaSonix in the future may be very different to what it is now. But once that knowledge is out there, even in limited form, it inevitably leads to shareholders wanting to augment their shareholding, and that in turn causes an increase in the share price. So to answer your question, the share price climbing is not in accordance with my plans. More accurately, it's a consequence of my plans."
Hannah studied his reply, absorbing the implications. Rossi was advising his clients against the merger, but she wasn't sure that she fully understood why. Was it really in the best interests of his clients? Because Maritech's offer was equity, so if the merger went ahead the shareholders in AquaSonix would become shareholders in the new merged company.
She hesitated before replying, not wanting to appear a nuisance, but eventually decided to ask him why he considered that taking shares in the new company wouldn't be a good deal. She reasoned that if the AquaSonix shareholders became shareholders in the new company they would still be set to benefit from Poseidon if that were to skyrocket valuation in the future.
She had to wait until the following day again, but Rossi answered her, this time keeping his answer short and to the point. "AquaSonix shareholders are being offered 33% of the merged entity, so they will only get 33% of the value that Poseidon creates."
Hannah frowned, checking the merger details again. She hadn't realized that AquaSonix shareholders stood to receive so little in the new company. No wonder Rossi was advising his clients against the merger. He clearly thought Poseidon would be transformative enough to make their 33% stake look paltry compared to what the company could achieve independently.
The shareholder vote wasn't far away now and she noticed that Robert Jensen, the AquaSonix CFO, was being quoted in business news reports. His message was that shareholder support for the merger was generally solid and the board expected it to be approved by a comfortable majority. He acknowledged that some shareholders weren't happy, but said that the dissenters weren't enough in number to affect the outcome of the vote. He also wanted to remind everyone that the original offer of 28% equity in the merger had been increased to what he called a favorable 33% stake. There was no mention of Poseidon or any new technology.
If Rossi's arguments were to be believed, Jensen was wrong in presenting the 33% stake as a fair deal. It made her wonder why AquaSonix were so keen on the merger, a question which had been puzzling her all along. Perhaps they knew something that Rossi didn't. Something that made the merger a better deal to them than it appeared to him. She decided to ask him if there was possibly some aspect of the deal that he'd overlooked.
"No," came Rossi's reply. "I've come to the conclusion that they're simply running scared. They know that Poseidon's going to be very big, maybe too big for them to handle, and they fear that when it's unveiled they'll be besieged by takeover bids and lose control of the company. They must see merging with Maritech as a safe haven, a friendly partner who will value and preserve the core business, management, and R&D. No doubt they've heard that they're too small, too specialized, too exposed to scale alone, so are vulnerable to takeover bids and need this kind of safe haven. That's exactly what Maritech wants them to believe. It's a pity the AquaSonix board can't see independence for what it truly is, a strength and not a weakness."
Hannah considered Rossi's words. Everything he'd said seemed plausible to her, but the AquaSonix board was set on its course and wasn't going to change now. Unless Rossi could somehow pull a rabbit out of the hat, and swing the shareholder vote, the merger would be approved and the narrative would draw to its likely conclusion. The vote was close now, so she didn't have long to wait before the result was announced and the outcome known.
The day of the vote came, and Hannah couldn't resist refreshing her news feed compulsively, waiting for the announcement, which didn't arrive until late in the afternoon. To her great surprise, AquaSonix shareholders had rejected the merger proposal, with a narrow majority of just 50.8%. The tone of the reporting was also one of considerable surprise and she was sure that without Rossi's intervention this unexpected outcome wouldn't have been possible.
Charles Bradford was prominent in the news reports, insisting as a major shareholder that the right decision had been made. The merger had never been in our interests, he explained, fervent in his belief that AquaSonix would continue to prosper as an independent company. He didn't make any reference to the alternate offer, which appeared to have been forgotten.
There was no mention of Rossi, but then Rossi operated in the shadows. That was his world. It had become her world too, she thought to herself, and she felt more at home in it than ever.
She leaned back in her chair, not needing the newsfeed on her screen anymore, as she reflected on everything that had happened over the last few months. She'd made her mark in a world of shadows, carved a place for herself, and proven she could navigate its dangers and opportunities. She now looked forward to what that world had in store for her in the future. She didn't know what lay ahead or what challenges she was going to face, but she was ready.
