Chapter 35 – The Funeral
Matthew avoided sleep for days, as it only brought him nightmares. Every time he thought about his best friend, he lost it.
At the funeral, two very different groups of people showed up. The first group consisted of family, friends, and members of the community that wanted to grieve and show support for Alex. The second group consisted of protesters who came out to preach scripture and hold up hateful signs.
“God Hates Gays” “Death to Homosexuals” “Alex in Hell” “Thank God for AIDS”
Matthew was livid. What were these animals doing at Alex’s funeral!
His friends tried to hold him back, but Matthew broke free and charged at the second group. He ripped up their signs and knocked out a few of them, but got hurt in the process. There were too many of them.
Matthew suffered cuts to the side of his face and bruises all over his body, before he was rescued by Professor Hubbard, who brought him to a safe location.
“Let me go!” pleaded Matthew. “I need to make them pay for what they did to Alex.”
It broke his heart to see his nephew like this. Professor Hubbard held the kid until he calmed down. Since Matthew refused to go home, he drove the kid to his place instead.
As his teacher treated his wounds, Matthew sat on the sofa and poured his heart out.
"It’s all my fault … I was his best friend. I should have protected him, I should have been there for him, but I wasn’t.”
“Matthew, it’s not your fault.”
“He was only eighteen! He didn't deserve this.”
“Matthew … let me know if there’s anything I can do for you.”
"Everything in this town reminds me of what I lost. I want to leave, but my mom ….”
“Don’t worry about your mom. I’ll look after her.”
Matthew looked at his teacher. He was extremely grateful to him for promising to look after his mom. This gave him peace of mind, as leaving his mom behind was his biggest worry.
“If you need to take a break, then do it. Just take care of yourself."
Matthew nodded. He was ready to leave everything behind.
"You’ll need money. I have some upstairs. I’ll go grab it for you.”
But before his teacher could leave, Matthew stopped him.
"I don't want your money, but I want something else …."
Matthew pushed his teacher back down on the sofa. Then he started taking off his clothes, black jacket and tie, white shirt, belt, dress pants, all the formal clothes that he wore to the funeral.
“What …. are you doing?”
“Thanking you for agreeing to look after my mom.”
Professor Hubbard couldn’t help but stare at the kid’s ripped body. It was really beautiful to look at. When he found out who Matthew’s parents were, he swore he would never have sex with him again. Yet here
