It was Saturday night, but not just any Saturday night. It was the night of Fiona’s burlesque performance. She packed a small overnight bag with her deliberately simple outfit, a crisp white blouse, a knee-length pencil skirt, and sensible low black heels. She was going for the office worker look. It was an unexciting look, but that was the point. Anything more exotic might raise the audience’s expectations, and for her first performance she didn’t consider that to be a good idea. She wanted a workaday appearance, the woman you passed in office corridors or sat next to on commuter trains. It was also the kind of outfit that Lila had recommended she wear, so she felt confident in her choice.

Fiona was pleased that Laura was fully on board with her appearance on the stage. They had discussed it on Wednesday, the day of the piano lesson this week, and she had been very encouraging. She had, however, been an even harder taskmaster than usual that day, demanding proof that Fiona was still a good piano student and hadn’t abandoned discipline for the intoxicating lure of the stage.

Fortunately, Fiona had done very well in the lesson and Laura had professed herself happy with her effort and application and also her progress. After the lesson, they had moved to Laura’s bedroom, as they usually did.
