I'd had a horrible day at work. It seemed like every time I'd recomplied the code, there were more errors than when I'd fixed the last bug. I hated working with uncommented code written by someone else for that exact reason. The project was three weeks behind schedule and the original author had quit and left the country. My manager was on my ass to get the code working, and more like yesterday than next week sometime. I knew I should be at work, coding like crazy, but I'd promised Kara weeks ago that I would be home for dinner tonight.

Kara is my wife of four years. She knew when she married me that there would often be all-nighters involved with any job I got. But she also wanted to see me at home on a semi-regular basis for dinner. So, we compromised: at the beginning of every month, we set aside one night a week where I will be home for dinner, no matter what. Usually I made it home more often than that, but some weeks (like this one) I slept, ate, and showered at the office. So, I make sure I get home on that once a week. My boss knows about the arrangement and knows I will leave no matter what the carrot (or the stick) is. Besides, my boss won't fire me, because he knows I'll work harder and better after seeing Kara and relaxing for a bit.
