Jessica Anderson crossed the decking by the pool and stretched herself out on her banana lounge. Her long legs and firm, athletic body and arms were a light brown from the past few days in the glorious sunshine which bathed her beach house. She had worked hard for this place. Two children by the time she was 21, dumped by her husband at 23, she had spent the following 14 years getting herself out of the mess she had spent the first 17 getting herself into.

She hadn't seen Chris since the day he left; the next day, she enrolled at teacher's college and spent three years living with her mother to get through it.
