BOWLING AND BALLING

My sexy wife Laura and I were bowling a few games at Al's Big Bowl one Friday night. It was the first time that we had been to Al's that we didn't have to stand in line for a lane. A large, modern bowling alley had opened a mile down the road and had taken most of Al's customers. Laura and I had no intention of defecting. We liked Al's because of all of the good memories it held for us.

We were the only customers in the place. Even the cozy bar was deserted. Live entertainment at the new alley had siphoned off all of the regulars. Pranksters hadn't even bothered to change the Al's Big Bowl sign to Al's Big Balls as they had hundreds of times in the past. It saddened me to see a place where thousands of people had had so much fun suddenly abandoned. I wonder how many boys had brought their first dates to Al's. How many girls had been picked up there? How many had lost their cherries in the parking lot?

"It just isn't the same, is it?" Laura asked. I could see that she was as sad as I was. We finished our game and headed for the bar for a drink. Al had already laid off the barmaid and was tending bar himself. "I can't hold out much longer," he said. "I've got a guy who wants to buy it and convert it to a grocery store." ...
