Night Shift

Working as a third shift nurse takes it's toll on your life, I can tell you. You get home around eight in the morning, to tired to sleep. Usually, I get to sleep around noon, which means that I get up around eight or nine, just enough time to get ready for another long night.

To make matters worse, I work in a very small community clinic. I spend the night as the only nurse caring for only five or six patients who usually sleep through the night.

Most of the patients I see are non critical, suffering from respiratory, or some other infections. Until last week, that was my life.

Last week, a young man was admitted. Mark was admitted because he had spent to much time in the hot sun and was feeling weak. I think the Doctor, not wanting to stay any longer, admitted him so he could leave and get on with his weekend.

By the time I got to work, Mark was feeling fine, and could have been released, if we could have found the Doctor.

To make a long story short, Mark was stuck there for the whole weekend. If he left, his insurance would not have paid the bill, he didn't have ...
