The Letter by Jay Love

I live in this complex of condominiums where each is a duplex, having an upstairs. What attracted me the most to the complex was the fact that the management encouraged alterations once you've committed to a purchase, and that each unit had a generous patio and backyard area that was separated by a twelve-foot high fence around the perimeter. Each condo also had it's own mailing address, and old-fashioned attached mailbox outside of the main door.

So, when I arrived home to find this mysterious envelope amongst my other mail in my mailbox, you can understand my apprehension about opening it. It is addressed, To The Stud In 5-B. I put my briefcase down, loosed my tie, and flopped down in the chair at my desk. I glanced through the other mail finally arriving at the mysterious packet.

I ran the letter opener across the top, feeling the fibers of the paper ...
