The Bus to Guanajuato

I love being in a Mexican bus station. They’re always filled people and unlike many terminals that I’ve encountered in the States, they’re almost always busy. Normally, I walk up and down the ticket counters and look for a bus line that’s going to where I want to go and note the departure times. Then I return to the one that suits me and buy my ticket. I like to get them a day or so in advance because I’m always afraid that if I wait until I’m ready to go all the seats may be taken. You never know.

Well, I did all that yesterday and now I’m here in one of the bus terminals of Mexico City waiting to board the bus to Guanajuato, a beautiful colonial town north of here and about 6000 above sea level. I like to travel at night so that I can sleep on the bus. This particular trip isn’t quite an overnighter, but I’m leaving late and I’ll arrive really early in the morning. I’m not on a budget, but it’ll save a night in a hotel and then I’ll have the whole next day to look for a place to stay.

Back home when I travel I always make hotel reservations in advance and pretty much try to avoid surprises. Also, I’m sorry to say, the only public transportation that I take is an airplane, but when I’m south of the border I like to be more relaxed and play it by ear.
