Practically a Virgin

It had been another long day. I run a management-consulting firm and we have been extremely busy. Our business is good when things are going really well or really bad. If it is right in the middle, we may be a little slow. Now we are in one of our fast times and I have been putting in 15 hour days.

That's just as well though because, since my wife was killed in an automobile accident a year ago, I don't have much of a social life anyway. We were married 23 years and they were all great. We weren't able to have children so we spent all our time trying to please each other. Since Lucy's death, I simply haven't had the heart to get into anything outside work. My mode was to work until I was exhausted, have a couple of drinks and collapse in bed for a fitful night's sleep.

Besides, I had just turned 45 and maybe I was past my prime. I felt fine physically and kept in good shape by working out every morning. Lucy had gotten us into a lifestyle that included healthy, low calorie meals so I ate sparingly and wisely. Therefore, I was firm and trim. My problems were more emotional. I didn't allow myself to admit it, but I was a lonely, empty man.
