The day had finally arrived. Azmard's ascension ritual from boyhood to manhood would occur today on his 18th birthday. Azmard had always thought of the ceremony with little care because 18 seemed so far away his entire life. Growing up in a palace, the son of the king, had made his young life very pleasant so far, and the years had gone by rather imperceptibly. But as the days got closer to his 18th birthday in the last few months, he began to feel a slight trepidation as to what the ritual would entail.

He got nothing about it from his father, nor his teachers or even his servants. The ceremony was of the utmost sanctity and had been not talked of much his entire life. But now that the day was coming, preparations had been in effect. He knew it was to take place on the evening of his birthday, and that no one would be present beside himself and the high priestess of the holy order.

Azmard had few encounters with any of the priestesses or the holy order during his life. Their temple was forbidden to non-holy women except on the one day of a young prince's ascension, where he, and only he, was allowed entrance to the sacred shrine. A holy ambassador of the temple was a member of his father's court and communicated the wishes of the order to the King's ear, along with speaking for the order in matters of state.
