I met Anne a month ago in the local bar that a group of us hung out in. We all worked at the local State University and most of us were single. Only Jim was married, and his marriage was in such bad shape that it really didn't count. Our ages ran from twenty- three to early fifties, and we were a rather strange group, I suppose. It had all started when I got divorced, and Jesse had started hanging out with me at the bar a block away from the university, really just to keep me company. She was the administrative assistant for my department, and was a really gorgeous young woman. She was only twenty-three and wasn't really interested in me sexually, but we had become friends since she started in the department about a year ago. I listened to her tales of woe regarding the perils of dating, and although I had been married for fifteen years and had forgotten almost everything I knew about dating, offered her advice when I could.

Over the next few months, there were the six of us that regularly spent evenings drinking more than we should. We all had our reasons for being there, I guess. Mine was my recent divorce. I had not been the one who wanted to get the divorce, but I hadn't cared enough to make a serious effort to keep my wife, either. I guess I had gotten lazy and my now ex-wife thought she could do better with someone else. Whether or not she found anything better, I don't know. I do know she married a guy who is ten years older than me.
