Indian Summer Part III

Takoda was exhausted. He tried without success to suppress a yawn as he led Sarah through the maze of trees before them. Two days ago his only intention was to sit by the lakeside and rethink a strategy for fighting off the encroaching colonists who were slowly taking the lush land of his people. He never dreamed that he would have met this beautiful maiden, killed Paytah and ran for his brother’s home hiding from the girl’s father. He wouldn’t trade a moment of this though, he was falling in love and the renewed sense of vigor was almost intoxicating. Takoda’s lack of sleep and food was starting to take its toll on his body. He needed to rest, but he wouldn’t dare close his eyes as long as Sarah was out in the open and vunerable. “Takoda, are you alright?” Sarah asked with concern. Her eyes were tired as well and rimmed with redness. He sighed deeply and waved a hand to indicate that he was fine, but she could tell by the way he walked that he was about to collapse. “You need to rest,” she insisted, “and eat.” Takoda tried to go on but Sarah’s small hand clasped his forearm bringing him to a halt.
