The Head of the Table

I had gotten a government sponsored job in a small island group in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I was stationed on a US military base, but actually worked across the lagoon where the local population lived. My wife Mary, our daughter, and my step- daughter where to follow in a few weeks when school ended for the summer. The only problem was that my step-daughter wanted to spend the summer with her dad. Of course, this was reasonable but caused logistical problems. The trip was long and required a two day lay-over in Hawaii. Obviously, at seven she was too young to make this trip by herself. Mary didn't really want to wait on the mainland all summer, either. The answer turned out to be Tony.

Tony was a long time acquaintance of Mary's. A classic Italian with the dark complexion and traditional values. Mary was also from an Italian family, but you'd never know it due to her red hair and pale complexion. Tony and Mary had even dated in years gone by. Tony owned his own financial services business and had done very well. He rarely took a vacation and Mary was surprised when she jokingly suggested that he come out on vacation and bring our daughter. He accepted immediately. You can't get to this area without special permission from the US government and he thought it would be a wonderful opportunity. It was all set.
