It was early June and I was shooting hoops in the driveway, when a voice called out from across the fence,

“Hiya, Sonny.”

I whipped around, it was Jenny, the daughter of our neighbours. It had to be, as she’s the only person, other than my dad, who calls me Sonny. “Hiya, Tinker-Bell.” I smiled.

“I’ll give you a game?”

“You’re on.”

“Ok, just a sec, let me get changed.” And she darted up into her house.

I hadn’t seen Tink since last summer. She’d been away at college in Vancouver all year, and for three years before that. At twenty-two she’s four years older than me, and just graduated from college, as her parents proudly told me. Tink and I have been friends since...since I can remember. Well not friends, but kinda, buddies. I’ve always wanted to hang out with her because she’s older, and smarter and cooler. And I guess she likes me because I’m a kid, a dreamer, with no hangups. Until she left for college she’d baby sit me for years when my parents were out, which was usually with her parents.
