At the age of sixteen my Dad uprooted the family and moved to Illinois. This was a truly traumatic time for me. I was leaving good buddies and a girlfriend of two years.

Our new home was in a subdivision filled with families. There were many kids my age, but getting to know them was a tough time. They were all friendly enough towards me. Inviting me to their homes for basketball and board games. However I was never included into their inner circle.

At the time I arrived at our new home, baseball leagues had already formed. All the guys in the area were on teams. Practices filled most of their days and nights were filled with baseball team talk. I felt like an intruder when I was in their gatherings.

My parents both worked and my older brothers had moved out of our house years ago. I had the house to myself all day. In my old neighborhood this would of been a dream. An empty house to invite my girlfriend over and have long makeout sessions. Except here I had no one to share the wonderful emptiness of a teenagers home.

One hot August morning I was reading the paper on the front porch. An article concerning high school football practice caught my eye. It stated practice would begin at the end of August. At the previous school I attended, I loved playing football. I was an average player.
