Catherine walked slowly down the cobblestone road, face down against the wind and cold rain. The dull gray weather matched her mood perfectly. She was one of very few people out on this kind of day, any other time she herself would be curled up under a blanket with her fiancé, but all was different now. She took her hand out of her pocket and swiped at the tears that had escaped thinking about what had happened. As she glanced up her eyes met those of a stranger across the narrow street. Here in this part of Scotland, cars couldn’t even park on the road; there was no room. Her and the stranger locked gazes, and time seemed to slow. His eyes seemed to glow with slow warm sensuality. She felt warm all over, as a quick stab of desire shot through her. He was tall, with thick black hair, and a sturdy frame. He was wearing a black trench coat, but she could tell that he was the kind of man who made a girl feel safe. He also appeared smarter than her, as he had a black umbrella to shield him from the driving rain. A few steps later and she was forced to look away, and think again on her destination. She was heading for the cliffs. Unknown to her, the stranger thought a minute, his brow creased in worry, then turned to follow her.

Catherine quickened her pace. She didn’t really know what to do, but the cliffs seemed a good answer. She knew now that she couldn’t go through with it, that he wasn’t worth ending her life over, but that had been her first thought. Head for the cliffs. It would probably make her feel better anyway, to look far down onto the ocean beating at the sharp rocks. The tears kept welling up, and she licked away a salty ...
