THE CADDY

I worked at many different jobs to pay my way through college. I delivered pizza, waited tables, washed dishes and sorted books in the library. I pumped gas, trimmed trees, and fried burgers. I had an adventure of some kind on every job. The wildest time I had was when I worked as a caddy at a resort golf course.

It was a scorching summer day in July and I would have preferred to be in the staff swimming pool instead of on the golf course. I was caddying for a wealthy businessman that day. He told me his name was Clyde and that he was in the "ole bidness" which is how Texans pronounce "oil business". Bob and Sam, his two companions, were in the same business. They were good old boys, friendly and down to earth. My two buddies Ray and Bret caddied for them.

By the time the Texans played the fifth hole, I knew that there was something unusual about them. They were all married men who complained about their wives constantly, yet I got the impression that they liked men, too. They were not effeminate in any way. On the contrary, they looked as though they had been in their share of bar brawls. It was just the things they said and how they said them.
