It was my fourth day at the army outpost. We had arrived in the middle of the night earlier that week, and had been put to work from dawn 'til way after dusk each day, building new temporary facilities to stay in.

I was dog tired, but I knew that everyone was. We were building our own area by adding on to a camp that was located in the middle of nowhere, and we had to carve our territory out of the raw rocky ground and try to turn it into a livable camp within just a few days.

The days had been long and exhausting, but what kept me going was being constantly surrounded by the rest of the young men in our troop. We had survived lots of training together, and while not exactly Top Gun school material, we were each in the best shape we would ever be in our lives.

Now in sunny south Viet Nam, the nearly 250 guys in our unit were being worked hard, and were getting accustomed to the heat and sun. Shirts were worn only during morning roll call, and muscles rippled as we built hooches from the ground up. That's what made the days bearable for me... being able to glance up and see muscular hunks surrounding me in every direction. That and being able to smear loads of sunscreen on neighbor's backs all through the day... I got real good at that!
