The gun went off and Eric went down. That was all I knew at the time: He was dead and I'd killed him.

It was an accident, what with him grabbing for the gun, except it's really not if the accident happens while you're committing a crime, like threatening a guy with a gun, especially an illegal gun. Then the accident is no different from murder, at least not for the purpose of getting your butt tossed in prison where there would be an abundance of gentlemen eager to do an Officer Stanicek number on it.

I was feeling pretty screwed already, even before showing up at Eric's office for some sort of Humphrey Bogart confrontation scene. You wave a gun at a guy and he's supposed to do what you tell him. Right sweetheart? Except my ex-brother-in-law didn't follow the script, so now he was lying limp beside his desk and my life was far more screwed up than before.

Now what? Well, I'm proud to say I didn't panic, at least not after my initial wild-eyed rushing about through his office trying to find a ...
