Last summer I flew to visit my parents for the Fourth of July weekend. The weather report predicted sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-eighties for the whole weekend. It would be perfect summer weather.

My plane got in around eleven in the morning. My dad met me at the gate and helped me with my bags. When we got home, mom had fixed us a big salad for lunch. I chatted with my parents about the classes I would be taking when I started business school in September.

It felt so good to be home. Around the middle of college, I had finally gotten over my teenage anger with my parents, and now I had grown to really enjoy their company. Being back in my old house and sitting around the kitchen table with my parents made me feel a warm glow of security and familiarity.

After lunch, my parents decided to go to an early movie. It was a film that I had already seen, so I begged off. I washed my face and brushed my hair to freshen up from my trip and changed into more comfortable clothes. I sat down in a big upholstered chair in the family room to read a book, but I just could not concentrate. It was such a beautiful day, and I had too much nervous energy to sit around in the house, so I decided to go for a swim.
