Chapter Five:

It had been three days, and they were on their way back to the caverns to report. Nothing. Not a single thing to report. Though Kira knew that was good news, she knew that Kinean wouldn't think so. The fact that the Kobolds apparently weren't doing anything to aid the orcs would only make him even more foul tempered.

Distracted by her own thoughts, Kira cried out when a sudden burst of flame exploded to their right. She clutched at Arenth's harness desperately, trying to just hang on as he banked sharply left, then shot straight down. The air around them was aflame, fireballs exploding everywhere. Frantically Kira tried to scan the ground, and saw something that made her blood run cold. God! What had to be a full army was beneath them, at least a dozen sorcerers in their black robes standing at the back, all looking up... She saw more fireballs barreling at them and yelled, "Arenth, look out!" She didn't even think to give him direction. She didn't have to; his defensive tactics she thought would put any mount's to shame.

Arenth took advantage of a momentary lapse in fire and breathed deep, his lungs billowing under her legs drastically. Kira knew what was coming.... Every ‘species' of dragon had a unique ability, referred to as a breath weapon. For Arenth and all bronze dragons, it was chain lightning. Arenth banked again, then reared up, stalling and pumping ...
