Some would say that it was a very boring town for a young girl but I was never bored. My Dad and Mom ran the only Chinese Restaurant for miles around. Dad was the cook, Mom ran the business and I waited on the tables. Here in Northern Alberta when we say "miles around" we mean MILES. You could guarantee that any Chinese person in the area would stop and eat at our restaurant. Most everyone else had eaten at our restaurant as it was the only non-Canadian fare around. Our menu was quite large considering that we were six hours drive from Edmonton. I had been waiting on tables since I was 13 and that was MY domain. My baby sister Jessica was just entering high school and it would be her turn to take the lead, waiting tables. Working for five years had not really been very lucrative. I didn't actually get paid and I even had to turn in my tips. Not having money really kept me out of trouble anyway and away from boys (unless they were paying customers) as I found out later. My dating policy was, when boys asked me out, the answer was always the same "no, I have to work."

I had first noticed boys when I was twelve but family policy was/is "he isn't Chinese." It was so nice when my cousins would come to visit. We were from Fujian province in China and we lived close to the sea. Sea food was a really big thing in our family and our business. My uncle who would come to visit us almost every year had two boys who would be the only two eligible males for me to marry. They weren't actually blood relatives but friends of the family from Fujian who Dad had been instrumental in bringing to Canada. He had never forgotten us and drove ...
