Fast forward to 1860.

As required when girls were in their last year at the Cavendish School for Young Women, they were required to attend lectures given by Nurse Cecelia Hastings. "Ladies, avoiding pregnancy until marriage will keep your virginity and your reputation sterling. There is only one tried and true method to do that, keep your legs crossed."

There were giggles from the girls, and when Nurse Hastings turned her back, Sophia Mercer put her closed fist to her open mouth. The laughter grew much louder.

Earlier in the school year, eighteen-year-old Sophia lost her virginity to Professor Matthew Dilberry from the Wilkinson School for Young Men. Professor Dilberry was close to fifty. He wasn't the first Wilkinson teacher to deflower one of the Cavendish girls. "Sophia, you were marvelous," he said as he gazed at her beautiful naked body lying on her back, next to him in bed.

Teenage girls haven't changed much over the centuries. They gossip; they can't keep a secret. Sophia Mercer may have been the first, but it was Eleanor Andrews who couldn't keep her mouth shut both literally and figuratively.

Eleanor made it her business to become familiar with as many men as possible. Of course, after the first one, they could no longer take her virginity, but her mouth, lips and tongue left them lasting memories, which she shared with as many of her classmates as would listen.

Within three years not only had every graduate of the Cavendish School for Young Women left without her virginity; she also no longer had a virgin mouth.

On the rarest of occasions, a male student at the Wilkerson School for Young Men was the recipient of those young girls' desires, but more often than not it was a man almost their father or grandfather's age. A neighbor at home; a teacher or a man these girls met in Manchester.

This was a new tradition, spread by the impossibility of pregnancy.
