Rent Matthew

Chapter 5 - Study Break

Over the next few days, Gordon tried to apologize, but the college student was hardly at home and never alone. A week had gone by before he got his chance.

"Matthew ... can I talk to you?"

"Talk about what?"

Gordon was momentarily startled by Matthew's tone.

"You mean talk about the night you were out of control? You were jealous, Gordon, and you took it out on me."

"I'm sorry, Matthew."

"I told you ... I warned you that what's between us is just business. If you had only listened ... no one would have gotten hurt."

"Matthew, I know I hurt you ... I don't know what to say or do, but I'm really sorry." That night, Gordon laid awake, staring at the ceiling, replaying how he had crossed the line. There were legal consequences to what he had done. Most of all, he was ashamed. He had hurt Matthew and he couldn't take it back.

It had been four months since Matthew moved in and, once again, it was time to pay the rent.

"Here's 300 pounds. Do you want the other 200 this Saturday?"

"Don't worry about Saturday."

"Then here's another 200."

Matthew handed Gordon the money.

"You don't have to pay ...."

"Don't tell me what to do. I don't take charity, remember?"

Gordon didn't get any action that day, but he had no regrets. He only wished he could do something for the kid to atone for how he had mistreated him.

The next few days weren't easy for Gordon. His chest tightened every time he thought about the kid. Gordon couldn't help it. He was attracted to his tenant and felt guilty about what he had done.

The kid was a mystery. Matthew sold his body for rent money, yet he couldn't be bought. He only asked for 200 pounds, even though his landlord would have gladly paid much more.

Gordon wasn't falling for the kid. In many ways, he already had. Not that he was romantically in love with Matthew. Gordon just deeply cared about him. So much so that he was willing to do anything for him. But was such a thing possible, to feel so strongly for someone you barely knew?

University exams were around the corner. All extracurricular activities like sports practice were suspended so students could focus on their studies.

When Gordon found Matthew asleep on the sofa with a book on his lap, he quietly draped a blanket over him. Though Gordon was careful, the kid woke up.
