“Good morning, how was the weekend?” Emily asked Matt.
“It was okay. As you saw, the hotel was very nice, and I did a hiking tour yesterday; the surrounding area is really stunning,” Matt replied.
“And how was it with Rachel?” Even though Emily reported to Matt, she felt entitled to ask about his love life because they had dated briefly in high school.
“She left on Saturday morning,” Matt replied tersely.
“Oh, why?” she asked, surprised.
“She felt it wouldn’t be a good idea if we got closer, being colleagues and so on,” Matt responded, staying intentionally vague because he had promised Rachel not to tell anyone about what had happened between them at the offsite event that weekend. And he was determined to keep his promise and not to tell anyone – including Emily.
“Well, I see her point, but it’s still a pity; I’d a good feeling about you both,” Emily said.
“Well, I’d say, it’s another chapter in my unsuccessful love life,” Matt said.
“Perhaps it’s just the wrong time. You will eventually find someone,” Emily tried to cheer up Matt.
“Anyway, let’s get back to business and find an alternative to Rachel’s restructuring plan and massive lay-offs,” Matt told her. Rachel was the company's CFO - chief financial officer - and had suggested cost-cutting measures, including the closure of a factory in Matt’s business line.
“I need to go to the Monday morning meeting with the other business line heads; see you later," Matt said and went to the elevators.
The elevator doors opened, and he looked at Rachel’s face. She looked beautiful with her long red hair and bright green eyes. He took in her shapely body, dressed in a black business suit, before saying, “Good morning, how are you?” There were three other people with her in the elevator whom he did not know, so they could not speak freely.
“Fine, thanks,” Rachel answered tersely.
“Was your journey home okay?” Matt asked, trying to make small talk.
“Yes, all went well. What about you? What did you do with the remainder of the weekend?” Rachel inquired.
“It was nice, I did a hiking tour yesterday,” Matt replied.
“Always the Boy Scout,” Rachel smirked when the elevator stopped, and she got out. This was how she had called him at the weekend.
Matt looked after her and smiled, thinking about them being together at the hotel over the weekend. ***
When he returned to his office after the meeting, Emily was already waiting for him with a big smile on her face.
“What is it?” Matt asked her.
“Great news! We won the big contract with DHW that we’ve been working on for so long,” she beamed.
“Great news, indeed,” Matt smiled. “That is exactly what we need to counter Rachel’s restructuring plan! I’ll immediately try to speak with her.” ***
“Hi Rachel, do you have a minute?” Matt asked Rachel, knocking on her office door.
“Sure, what’s up?” Rachel asked. ”Have a seat.”
