It was Friday afternoon. I had just gotten back to my dorm room after my last class when the phone rang. "Hey, Heather, it's Terry. My friend Beth is having a get-together with some friends tomorrow night. Wanna join us?"

"Sure. What time?"

"After seven or so. I'll already be there, but one of Beth's and my friends is in town, and he said he'll take me to the dorm to pick you up." I should explain that this was necessary because both Terry and I are blind. Terry can tell darkness from light. I've been legally blind since I was 14, but I can read print on a machine that magnifies it, and I can make out facial features up close.

"Great," I told him. "Call me before you leave so I'll be ready."

Terry called me early in the afternoon the next day. Bobby, his friend, would pick us up and we'd buy some supplies for the party. Terry was responsible for potato chips and I was responsible for some of the booze. We chatted a little more and I asked Terry to tell me about Bobby.

"He's a really nice guy. When he was in grad school here, he lived in the dorms and he did stuff like this for us all the time. One time a friend of ours had to take a bus two days a week to a student teaching ...
