"This isn't right!" Something in his head repeated the phrase, over and over.

The watch on his wrist informed him that the agreed time was still an hour away. Across the road the restaurant was brightly lit in the winter dullness. His eyes searched through the customers. Did he really expect to recognise anyone? This place was hundreds of miles from his home town and he had never before come so far in this direction. Doubts nagged his thoughts and brought a knot to his insides.

When he agreed to the meeting it had seemed natural; to meet after what felt like years, although it was how long? A matter of only six months! Why did he try to fool himself? Every day had been counted from that first encounter.

Agreed to the meeting? He had used every ploy in the book to ensure that the meeting took place, stopping short at actually begging on his bended knees.

Its twenty seconds since he last looked at the time, albeit the watch face now failed to come into focus as he couldn't concentrate long enough for it to register.

"What if?" The voice in his head nagged. It developed the argument by reminding him that he was a fifty-two year old man, severely unfit, ...
