Sonya was standing alone in the kitchen, absently swirling egg salad inside a tupperware around with a fork. The noises of the party were muffled and distant here on the third story. Walking in, I was fixed with her lamp-like brown eyes.

"Not having fun?" she asked.

Images swam through my head---another party, years ago; a beach party, a sun recently set over the Pacific, a sky ranging from yellow just over the western horizon to thick navy and starlit in the opposite direction, a rock formation among the dunes 100 yards from the seething mass of drunk high school students. I can't recall everything that was said that night, but I remember Sonya, slight but not petite, with purple streaks in her dark hair back then, walking over to me as I sat on the rocks looking up at the sky. We were seventeen and the loud, bright haze of the beach party made both of us uncomfortable. The pale yellow of dawn appeared above the eastern horizon before we finally parted that night, although the sun was yet to show its face.

Realizing I was being silent, I shrugged. "Not really my kind of thing. They're Liam's friends mostly. How about you?"
