Carley slammed the front door; the only word now ringing in her ears was "bitch". The word meant nothing in everyday talk, among her group of friends each had called the other the same thing, but in fun, not as Kevin had said it a few seconds ago.

It wasn't as if this was their first row, or the first time he had said the word during an argument. This time he had said it with vehemence, and the look on his face told her that he meant it to hurt.

The car made its usual double-squeak and clunk as she pointed the plip at it and pressed the door release. She forgot to wait for that stupid light to go out on the dash telling her... oh, she never did know what it was supposed to tell her other than the engine wouldn't start till something or other warmed up. The diesel finally fired up, Carley looked over her shoulder at the front door; typically he wasn't at the door calling her back.

With venom, she slammed it in gear, gunned the engine and let in the clutch. It was a gutsy engine for a diesel and the tyres screamed in protest at such a violent start. In the mirror she was aware of smoke that was caused by rubber abusing the tarmac.

Even through eyes filled with tears she realised that no light projected from the car which made it difficult to see beyond the front of the vehicle. ...
