It was one of those occasions that you attended as much out of obligation as a real desire to be there. Office weddings were always the same. Invited for the evening reception only, you and your co-workers arrived, stone cold sober with a sense of being left out, but also with a hope of an entertaining night out, a chance to create some office gossip to feed off over the next few weeks at the coffee machine.

The bride looked lovely, all the weeks of preparation, planning, panic, and tears seemed to have paid off. Perhaps when she returned from honeymoon she could knuckle down and do some real work, rather then having that constant pre-occupied look on her face, no real sense of urgency ever getting through. I told myself to stop being catty, and to be pleased for her, just because I had been off-love for so long, why begrudge others?

I scanned the room, waiting for an opportunity to approach Helen the blushing bride to pass on my heartfelt congratulations. I recognised a few people from the Hen Night and waved, carefully keeping my distance, not really wanting to be engaged in conversation. I needed a drink, a large red wine would be ideal.
