The thick, sickly sweat stench of fresh cigarette smoke filled Dave's lungs. They all smelled the same. They all sounded the same. He hated the smell, but everything else was a strange sort of comfort, which was why, every time he was on the road over the weekend, he'd find the closest casino to spend his night.

He liked gambling, at least a little, but that wasn't why he repeated the pattern, at least two weekend a month. It was the energy. Sitting alone in a bar, especially a hotel bar, always felt so sad and small. Here, he could pretend to be a part of a party, to disappear into the crowd. It was easier to strike up a random conversation, to feel less alone.

When Dave took this job, he was told he'd need to travel at least half the time. In reality, it was two-thirds, or more. He hated being away from his wife and two kids, but the money was opening up all kinds of opportunities for them, and when he was home, he could focus entirely on them.

But these times, especially the weekends, it was hard. When he was out west, and they were home in the east, it was even worse. He video-chatted with the kids before they, and his wife, went to bed, and it was still before 7pm. So much day left to fill.

And so, once again, here he was, in a nameless, faceless sea of bells ...
